Breathing New Life into a Brazilian Cherry Floor: A Journey of Craftsmanship

Every custom hardwood floor has a story, and the Brazilian cherry project was no exception. From its humble beginnings as a particle board installation to its transformation into a cohesive and elegant hardwood masterpiece, this project was a testament to the power of thoughtful design, adaptability, and skilled craftsmanship. Here’s how it all came together.

Preserving History While Embracing Change

When I first saw this floor, it presented unique challenges. The original Brazilian cherry hardwood was installed on particle board—an unusual and less-than-ideal choice for a foundation. Rather than start over and rip out everything, I made the decision to work around the existing layout.

This approach not only preserved some of the home’s history but also allowed me to focus on adding new design elements that would enhance the space. One such element was a stunning border inspired by the leaded glass design of the entry door. This border tied the floor and the space together, creating a seamless and artistic flow.

A Story of Function and Beauty with a Custom Hardwood Staircase

The staircase was another focal point of this project, and it came with its own challenges. Over the years, the bottom step had been modified and shifted out, reducing headroom by seven inches. This not only affected the staircase’s functionality but also disrupted the flow of the space.

Our solution? Moving the staircase back to its original position. This adjustment reclaimed the lost headroom and restored balance to the entryway. It’s these kinds of challenges that highlight the artistry in craftsmanship—not just making something look good, but making it work better for the homeowners.

We also ensured that the staircase retained its visual appeal by integrating it into the overall design of the floor. Every detail, from the placement of the steps to the continuity of the hardwood, was carefully planned to create a cohesive and polished look.

Finishing Touches on a Custom Hardwood Floor with Odie’s Oil

The final step in the Brazilian cherry project was applying the finish, and the clients opted for Odie’s Oil. This finish is a product I love for several reasons: it enhances the natural beauty of the wood, provides durability, and is 100% toxin-free.

To make sure the application was flawless, I worked with Paul Zsolt Golenya from Odie’s, who brought his expertise and even supplied the product for the project. The result was a rich, warm tone that highlighted the intricate grain of the Brazilian cherry while protecting the wood for years to come.

The collaboration with Odie’s was a reminder of how the right partnerships and materials can elevate a project, ensuring the final result exceeds expectations.

Craftsmanship Meets Adaptability

One of the most rewarding aspects of this project was the balance between preserving the old and introducing the new. Brazilian cherry is a unique and richly colored hardwood, and its distinctive look required a thoughtful approach. By using three-and-a-quarter-inch raw boards, we matched the existing wood while introducing a fresh, updated design.

The decision to keep parts of the original floor while adding modern touches like the decorative border allowed us to celebrate the home’s history while making it more functional and beautiful for the present.

The Art and Challenge of Custom Hardwood Projects

This project underscored what I love most about working with custom hardwood: every floor is unique. Whether it’s incorporating a new design inspired by the space, solving structural challenges, or collaborating with experts like those at Odie’s, there’s always an opportunity to create something truly one-of-a-kind.

Brazilian cherry floors, in particular, demand attention to detail. From their vibrant color to their intricate grain patterns, they’re a joy to work with but require the utmost care to get just right. This project was no different, and every step of the process—from moving the staircase to applying the final coat of oil—was approached with precision and passion.

A Transformation to Remember

The Brazilian cherry project wasn’t just about creating a beautiful floor; it was about solving problems, enhancing functionality, and crafting a space that felt timeless and cohesive. By the time the project was complete, the clients had a floor and staircase that were not only stunning but also deeply personal—a reflection of their home’s story and their vision for the future.

Final Thoughts

Custom hardwood projects like this one are about more than just materials and finishes; they’re about bringing a vision to life. Whether it’s working with unique woods like Brazilian cherry, collaborating with experts, or overcoming structural challenges, the goal is always the same: to create something that’s both functional and breathtaking.
