In January of 2025, I returned to Denver to work on another custom staircase. When craftsmanship speaks for itself, word travels fast. After completing a custom staircase in Denver last year, the homeowners’ parents—impressed by the quality and attention to detail—purchased a home just half a mile away. They wanted a custom staircase that matched the level of artistry in their children’s home, so I teamed up once again with Keith Long of Thunderheart Flooring to bring their vision to life. This time, we faced a new set of challenges, but the result was a beautiful, durable staircase designed to last for generations.
Identifying the Issues with the Existing Staircase
The house, built in the 1970s, had a staircase that had been problematic for over 50 years. The original construction didn’t properly account for the top and bottom steps, creating safety hazards that the homeowners had dealt with for decades. The first step was particularly troublesome—it had a bullnose that extended an inch and a half further than it should have, making the step itself too short. The treads were already under code at 9 ⅜ inches (the minimum should be 10 inches), and this misalignment made the first step even smaller.
This design flaw caused real-world issues for the homeowner, who struggled with depth perception. Every time they stepped onto the staircase, they had to compensate for the awkward dimensions. It was time to build a custom staircase that not only looked great but also functioned flawlessly.
Rebuilding for Precision and Safety
To fix the structural issues, we completely rebuilt the staircase while keeping the existing stringers in place. Since they were out of level, we adjusted the heights to make sure each step was even and up to code. Every tread was carefully measured, cut, and installed with precision, ensuring a smooth and safe walking experience.
A key part of this process was the technique we used to attach the treads. Instead of traditional nails, we opted for a dowel-and-glue method. This involved drilling dowel holes into the stringers and matching them to corresponding holes in the bottom of the treads. Once glued and set in place, this approach created a rock-solid foundation without any visible nail holes, resulting in a clean, seamless look.
A Collaborative Learning Experience
This project was more than just a staircase rebuild—it was also an opportunity to mentor another craftsman. Keith invited Tyler Looney, a talented woodworker who drove 10 hours to be part of the project. He was eager to learn the ins and outs of stair building, and I was happy to guide him through the process.
We followed a hands-on learning approach: I would demonstrate a step, then let Tyler replicate it, working alongside him to ensure he fully understood each technique. It was a great experience passing on knowledge to someone so eager to learn, and it reinforced my belief that craftsmanship should always be shared.
The Finishing Touches: A Stunning Custom Staircase
Once the structural work was complete, it was time for the finishing details that would bring the custom staircase to life. We installed solid white oak treads chosen for their durability and timeless appearance. The homeowners also opted for black metal pickets, adding a striking contrast to the warm tones of the wood.
In total, we installed 138 pickets, each requiring precise spacing and alignment. To ensure accuracy, I built a custom jig that helped us drill each hole at the perfect position. This careful planning ensured that every picket was evenly spaced and structurally secure.
A Project Built to Last
This custom staircase was more than just a renovation—it was a transformation. By correcting the structural issues, enhancing safety, and incorporating high-quality materials, we created a staircase that will stand the test of time.
More than that, this project reinforced why I love what I do. Working alongside skilled craftsmen like Keith and mentoring rising talent like Tyler made this experience incredibly rewarding. Craftsmanship isn’t just about the final product—it’s about the process, the learning, and the shared passion for creating something truly exceptional.
