Knowing when something is right is important to a project. I also know when something is wrong, which is a different perspective. Sometimes this is more of a feeling than an intellectual judgment. I consider that feeling for some time before I can put it in words. This process results in projects that are more satisfactory to me and to my clients.

Creating is an organic, synergistic process for me. Organically, I work with what the materials, wood, metal and granite, show me. Wood, especially, guides me to shapes and colors that support the design of the project.

Synergy, the fusion of vision, space, material and my client's ideas, provides the impetus for forming the gestalt that is the final result. I think that the floors show this in a dramatic manner.

I started drawing when I was a young child. By the time I was a teenager, I was doing portraits of my friends and drawing whatever caught my eye and my interest, from cars to buildings to 3-D renderings and cutaways. In college, some additional art and drawing classes helped me raise my skills and strengthened my trust in my personal vision.

My first custom floor was a solution to a problem of my own. I built my home and wanted a wood floor for the living room and entry. Disliking all of the off-the-shelf flooring I looked at, I began to consider the possibilities inherent in a three ton log that I had. A friend owned a portable sawmill... I decided to mill the log into boards to create my flooring.

Handling a three ton log presents its own problems; however, we managed to mill the boards and get them dried. Having the rough sawn boards to look through gave me some ideas about how the floor might look. After a good deal of internal discussion, I decided on the Swirl design that you can see here.

One of the most important goals of any of the projects that I develop is that the client has a result that they are glad to come home to. All of the projects are the result of comingling ideas to produce the final result. I care deeply about the work that I produce, paying close attention to details that are important to the final result. There are times when a client will say, "What are you doing this or that task for when it seems hardly noticeable?" When they see the finished project, they see that what seemed insignificant earlier has added real substance to the project and value to their home.
